Ambitious proposals revealed for Coventry Market as City Centre South scheme progresses

Published on

Councillor Jim O’Boyle announced that the enhancements will give Coventry Market an eye-catching appearance

A sum exceeding one million pounds is set to be spent on Coventry Market, which holds Grade II listing status. The project aims to transform the venue into an impressive focal point that contributes to the city’s future and the £450 million City Centre South scheme.

Coventry City Council revealed it has obtained £600,000 via the Pride in Place programme, together with £200,000 from the Hill Group and £400,000 from the West Midlands Combined Authority. This funding will go towards modernising the market’s exterior and emphasising its distinctive circular architecture, creating a more lively atmosphere.

Proposals include sprucing up the external areas and clearing unsightly obstructions along Queen Victoria Road. Window cleaning will also be carried out, alongside the installation of new entry points, wayfinding signs, and illumination.

The works are intended to back the refreshed city centre and deliver City Centre South, a development centred on residential use with a mix of retail, office space, and landscaped gardens.

Councillor Jim O’Boyle, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Regeneration and Climate Change, expressed that Coventry Market has served as a central feature of the city centre for decades, and efforts are underway to guarantee it plays a significant role in the Coventry of tomorrow.

As City Centre South takes shape, Coventry Market will become more prominent than ever before, forming part of a completely revamped district that replaces worn-out and underutilised areas with energetic public spaces and a vibrant new neighbourhood. The objective is to ensure Coventry Market participates in this transformation, and this investment will enable it to become an attractive destination that encourages visitors to explore the excellent trading stalls within.

Coventry Market will continue trading throughout the demolition and reconstruction phases of the City Centre South development. Vendors have received assistance including discounted rates, consultations with developers, and upgraded signage.

Chris Charley, representing the Market Committee, stated on behalf of the traders that they are thrilled and delighted by this announcement. The recognition of Coventry Indoor Market as such a crucial element of the city centre is wonderful. While pride in its heritage runs deep, this development secures its prospects, offering reassurance for their enterprises moving forward.

Extensive collaboration has taken place with numerous individuals and bodies who have united to champion and assist Coventry Market. This is positive news, and it is hoped the public continues to back Coventry Market in the years ahead.

Councillor O’Boyle further noted that Coventry residents have a genuine affection for Coventry Market, and Coventry City Council shares this sentiment. It forms an integral part of urban life, and with this funding combined with schemes already in motion, it can become the bright, appealing and prosperous centre of city activity that it warrants.

The improvement proposals are slated for submission for approval towards the end of this year, with completion anticipated by late 2027. Elected members are also evaluating long-term strategies for internal upgrades to the structure.

Stuart Bale, Project Director for City Centre South at the Hill Group, commented that supporting Coventry Market with this transformation is a source of pride. As such a vital meeting point for the city, assistance where possible is welcome.

Future occupants of City Centre South will have Coventry Market practically on their doorstep, granting convenient access to independent retailers, fresh goods and introducing them to the friendly community atmosphere that defines Coventry.
