Council confirms new future for chapels at three Nuneaton cemeteries

Chapels at three Nuneaton cemeteries could become burial vaults. That is one of the options being considered by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council as it aims to solve the ever decreasing amount of burial space in the town. It was agreed by cabinet members to look into potentially repurposing chapels at Attleborough, Bucks Jill and Oaston Road cemeteries for burial vaults. The chapel at Oaston Road has been closed since December last year amid safety concerns. At the time the council took what it described as a precautionary measure after structural concerns were raised. Now this chapel and two others in cemeteries elsewhere in the town could play home to burial vaults. This is one of a number of options the cabinet agreed to try and solve the need to find more burial space in the town. They ruled out proposals which could have seen some current park land used for burial space but it was proposed that land off Park Lane be look at as a potential cemetery. This would require investigation work to see if the land is suitable and this recommendation, along with others, have to be agreed at by the full council, which will meet on Wednesday, April 29.
