Thousands of Sikhs gathered in Coventry for the annual Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan. It marked one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar and drew large crowds from across the West Midlands.
Vaisakhi commemorates the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It represents a defining moment in history and celebrates values such as equality and justice.
Starting at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash, the colourful procession made its way along Howard Street, Stoney Stanton Road, Cross Road, Foleshill Road and Harnall Lane West. Streets were lined with spectators as participants joined the vibrant celebrations on Sunday (April 26).
Several decorated floats travelled through Foleshill, led by one carrying the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Leading the Nagar Kirtan were the Panj Pyare, dressed in traditional attire and carrying ceremonial swords and Sikh flags.
Dhols echoed through the streets as the procession moved forward. Crowds of onlookers enjoyed the display, as previously reported by CoventryLive.
Months of planning go into organising the Nagar Kirtan, with preparations beginning as early as January. Attendees said the day was ‘very joyful.’
In keeping with the Sikh principle of ‘Vand Ke Chakna’, meaning to give to others, a number of British organisations were supported this year and each received £501. Among them were PTSD Resolution, CRASAC, and the Meningitis Research Foundation.
