A horse riding facility catering to disabled people in Nuneaton has voiced worry about council proposals for a possible new cemetery. Jill Dagnan, who manages the Nuneaton and North Warwickshire Equestrian Centre, voiced her objections during a full council gathering on the evening of April 29. She discussed the authority’s intentions to possibly convert land it holds near Park Lane into a burial ground in the future. The riding school presently leases this parcel from the council. However, Ms Dagnan advised that her organisation had received no information about these proposals. She stated to the council chamber that the facility had not received any official consultation from the council regarding the plan. She explained that as far as she was aware, the land currently under lease was being suggested for use as a cemetery, and her organisation had no knowledge of this proposal. She went on to say that on behalf of the charitable organisation and the hundreds of individuals from both the local area and the wider region who utilise their services, they required clarity on what impact this proposal would have on the organisation’s future and on grazing rights. She finished by stating they wished to understand what was occurring. In response, leisure portfolio holder Councillor Brady Hughes explained that the council, like other authorities, was experiencing a shortage of burial space and having dismissed the option of using recreation areas, was examining other council-owned sites. This includes the location near Park Lane but the cabinet member emphasised this was presently merely a proposal for the medium to long-term period and that investigative work still needed to be conducted. She clarified that should matters advance further, the riding school would be consulted.
