Coventry takeaway handed one-star hygiene rating over ‘food safety’

Published on

A Coventry takeaway has been told to improve its standards after receiving a one-star hygiene rating. Inspectors who visited AE Chicken in Willenhall found problems with food handling and safety procedures.

AE Chicken on St James Lane was inspected by Coventry City Council on June 10. Concerns were raised over hygienic food handling.

Issues were found with the cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage of food. Cleanliness was also found to be below the required hygiene standards.

Facilities needed for good food hygiene were found to be inadequate. Staff also had gaps in their knowledge of food safety practices.

Significant changes were needed in how food safety was managed. Systems in place to ensure food was safe to eat were found to be lacking in several areas.

Inspectors said they had doubts over whether hygiene standards would be maintained. Coventry City Council is working with the business to ensure it complies with food safety regulations.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “Based on the standards of food hygiene found during the inspection on June 10, AE Chicken received a food hygiene rating of 1, meaning major improvements were necessary. We have continued to work with the business to ensure that food safety laws are met, improvements are made, and the outlet is safe.

“Whilst improvements can be made by businesses following the inspection, they do not automatically alter the food hygiene rating score, but AE Chicken can apply for a re-rating. If AE Chicken does not apply for a re-rating, the rating will be reviewed and updated at the next planned inspection.”
