Locals have been abused by drivers as they attempted to stop them moving barriers around a road closure in Nuneaton.

CoventryLive yesterday reported that motorists have been moving the barriers that are up on a section of Arbury Road.

They are in place due to a hole in the road caused by Severn Trent works..

The busy stretch of main road is closed but drivers have been ignoring it, removing the barriers and driving along the pavement on both sides of the road.

In some cases they have narrowly missed cars parked on drives.

Locals have been putting the barriers back – only to face abuse from drivers.

Some have even put wheelie bins out to try and stop the motorists – but they have been moved.

The situation reached boiling point yesterday afternoon when a number of locals called the police.

“We have been sworn at and threatened,” said one resident, who did not want to be named.

“They are moving the barriers and they just driving along the pavement, thank god it is the school summer holiday as hundreds of children walk up this road to go to school.

“They (the drivers) just don’t care, we have seen articulated lorries, council bin wagons and even Asda delivery drivers mount the pavement.”

They have also complained to Severn Trent.

The water firm previously told CoventryLive that the water leak, which first emerged last Wednesday (July 22), has now been fixed and that they hoped to get the road open ‘as soon as possible’.

However, no date has been officially given for the works to repair the hole in the road before it can be officially re-opened.

CoventryLive has contacted Warwickshire Police about the incidents of abuse and alleged traffic offences.
