Coventry road closure: three weeks for essential bridge maintenance

Motorists and locals have been warned to anticipate hold-ups as repairs to a notable overpass just beyond Coventry are poised to shut a heavily-used roadway.

A substantial portion of Main Road in Ansty will be inaccessible for a period of three weeks commencing shortly, with alternative routes operating throughout.

Despite the overpass, which spans the Oxford Canal, being situated within a rural settlement, the carriageway serves as a vital throughfare for business and commuting purposes given its closeness to the Ansty Interchange together with links to Walsgrave and northern Warwickshire.

The scheme, undertaken by Balfour Beatty on instruction from Warwickshire County Council, will commence on 10 August, with the thoroughfare remaining shut until 1 September to facilitate structural improvements and examinations.

The council’s advisory indicates the pavement will also be off-limits, with substitute pathways arranged.

For those heading toward Coventry, the suggested detour will redirect motorists away from Ansty in the direction of Brinklow, passing through Bretford, Binley Woods, Binley and then onto the A444 toward Ball Hill, using Walsgrave Road, Ansty Road and subsequently Hinckley Road.

The overpass has long been a source of frustration for commuters, with a history of persistent congestion stemming from intermittent traffic management measures spanning roughly six years.

The scheme represents the newest development in the region, following ambitious proposals to revamp the Walsgrave Junction. This Coventry boundary location has evolved into a crucial commercial artery over generations, though inadequate transportation infrastructure has perpetually created traffic challenges.

Construction at Walsgrave Junction commenced recently, with completion projected for 2028. Anticipated collaborative efforts on adjacent highways forming part of high-capacity transport networks, such as the Ansty Bridge scheme, are expected to proceed concurrently.
