Coventry City are in reported to be in talks with Sheffield United over a possible return for Gustavo Hamer – a move that would surely be well-received by the Sky Blues faithful.
Hamer left the Sky Blues in the summer of 2023 for the Blades in a £15m deal that saw him signing up on a four-year deal after the play-off final defeat to Luton Town.
The 29-year-old has had a good run at Bramall Lane, with 22 goals and 29 assists over the past three seasons. Now with just one year left on his contract, he is being linked with an emotional return back to the Coventry Building Society Stadium.
We took a look at what the Sky BVlues fans are saying about the link and whether they would be welcoming of a return for a player that was once so popular at the club.
devoncream: This one came out of the Sky Blu, but welcomed, whether or not he can find the same form or even get into the starting XI is another matter, but good cover to have. Still need to sign another top-quality forward, though, as cover for Wright & Simms!
SkyblueDavey: He will be a great addition to the squad.
Kevtallulah: Come on, Gus, come home, pal!!
nothankyoumarkrobbins Brilliant news, class, class player!
Henergy: It’s been too long, Gustavo. Get back where you belong PUSB
1987stew: I am not unhappy as he was great to watch in a City shirt. Many here seem ecstatic, but no one has said who they want him to replace.
joeyryan: Hamer is a tough-tackling midfielder who is also skillful. He’ll start plenty of games against particular teams and also come off the bench to change the pace of the game. I see him as a tactical signing rather than a specific replacement for anyone. He’s played in the Prem and we know he can do it
pusbm1989: He’s been a lot more attacking with Sheff United, so I envisage him maybe as the Rudoni alternative than the Onyeka one. Unless we sign anyone else, I think Onyeka and Grimes are nailed on
John3929: Fantastic news
briansbf: Could be just what`s needed, to get Haji and Ellis firing again.
sully1976: Yes, please, Frank can get the best out of him, he has proven he can do it in the Prem. Play him in the correct position, unlike Sheff, but a backup on the wing too if need be
Spitfire617: Depending on how much they owe us, it could be a “free”.
ccfc69: Bring him home Frank…
pusbm1989: Trying to have a balanced view on this. We all love Gus, he’s a very talented player, he loves the club, and if he’s available for a good price, then why not…. I was kind of hoping for better to come in the midfield. He’ll have to get a bit fitter, and given that he’s only actually had one season at prem level, it’s somewhat of a risk. It would be lovely seeing him in a City shirt again, though.
pusbm1989: Right, so no player ever leaves a club that they are happy at? He left to join a Premier League team at the time for more money (rumours were he would have stayed if we had offered him enough), and he comes to watch the games when he can.
Frankssupersbs: Rooney Everton, Fabregas Barca, Gazza Newcastle, etc., etc., footballers leave clubs they love all the time for better opportunities. I can get my 5 y/o to explain it more for you, if you need.
According to Will Oelrich of BBC Sport, the Sky Blues have held positive talks with the Championship side and discussions remain ongoing. Interestingly, it’s claimed that Sheffield United still owe Coventry money from the move that took him away from the club three years ago and that could be vital in a reunion.
Hamer’s return would be a huge moment in the Sky Blues’ transfer business this summer. Frank Lampard’s men have strengthened their centre-back options with Aurele Amenda while Loum Tchaouna has arrived from Burnley. Frank Onyeka’s loan move from Brentford has also been made permanent.

Coventry are close to re-signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth after reaching an agreement with Brighton worth £22.5million. The 25-year-old played an integral role for Lampard’s side last season.
Rushworth kept 17 clean sheets in 46 Championship appearance as Lampard’s side defied the odds to win the Championship. It has been a summer of speculation regarding Coventry and their business in the transfer window, in particular the goalkeeping department.
