An initiative targeting unlicenced retailers in Nuneaton has been described as the most extensive operation of its kind ever conducted in Warwickshire.
According to CoventryLive, numerous searches were carried out across the town centre and Queens Road area.
As a result, six premises received closure orders, with some compelled to shut their doors for periods extending to three months.
Several other establishments had their tenancy agreements terminated, allowing landlords to reclaim their buildings.
One company executive, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody at court pursuant to an outstanding warrant connected to violations committed in Luton.
Two of the three Nuneaton premises searched, subsequently shuttered following the service of notices
Alongside the legal proceedings, the enforcement action resulted in the confiscation of 16,280 cigarettes (representing 814 individual packets), 67 packets of hand-rolling tobacco and 853 vaping devices, with a total estimated worth of £20,950.
‘Oncology of our commercial districts’
Warwickshire County Council has now disclosed that the operation, designated ‘Operation Etone’, represented the largest such undertaking in the county’s history.
Further action may be imminent, according to council leader councillor George Finch, who stated that these disreputable establishments constitute an affliction upon the nation’s shopping areas.
He explained that these are not innocent ventures merely offering cut-price cigarettes beneath the counter. They frequently serve as facades for organised crime networks, dealing in hazardous and non-compliant goods, exploiting workers through illegal employment and channelling revenues into broader unlawful enterprises.
They exploit local populations, focus on young people and disadvantage legitimate businesspeople who operate fairly, fulfil their fiscal obligations and provide legal employment.
Councillor Finch continued that for considerable time, wrongdoers have acted as though they could establish enterprises in our towns without consequence.
Operation Etone demonstrates that this period is concluding in Warwickshire.
The council is not concerned with hollow threats. Premises are being shut down, illicit merchandise is being confiscated, those responsible are being pursued and the financial resources sustaining these criminal enterprises are being eliminated.
His directive to anyone participating in this illicit commerce was unambiguous: they are unwelcome in Warwickshire. Whether individuals are peddling unlawful tobacco, employing workers illegally or exploiting commercial areas to facilitate organised immigration crime, enforcement action will follow.
The council will collaborate with police, district authorities, property owners and every relevant regulatory body to eliminate these criminals from the county’s shopping districts.
