The summer transfer window is ramping up with Coventry City expected to unveil Carl Rushworth as the club’s latest signing any day now, ending weeks of tough negotiating.

And with just three weeks left before the Sky Blues kick-off the new Premier League campaign at Arsenal, and just over four until the window shuts on September 1, the club are expected to start getting their business over the line amid a flurry of activity and on-going links to several reported targets.

Here’s a round-up of the latest news, reports, gossip and rumours doing the rounds as Frank Lampard continues to build his squad.

Sorba Thomas

According to the Daily Mail, Stoke City winger Sorba Thomas is attracting interest from Coventry City, West Ham, Stuttgart and Genoa.

The Wales international impressed against Everton in Stoke’s 1-0 friendly win on Tuesday evening and interest has been building in the 27-year-old following his last campaign where he scored ten goals and provided ten assists in the Championship. Stoke are understood to value him around £9million, claims the report.

Thomas, of course, is an international teammate of Jay Dasilva’s and plays just in front of him on the left flank for their country.

Gus Hamer

This is a link that certainly got the Sky Blue faithful excited this week when the BBC claimed City are trying to get the former fan favourite and talented midfield play-maker to return to the CBS Arena.

Blades Ramble podcast have provided an update on City’s reported interest, with host Jimmy Smith saying: “From what I understand, Gus Hamer is happy to stay at Sheffield United, and is certainly not pushing for a move and it’s not a case of him being funny with the new contract or anything like that.

“We have got no bids currently on the table, and that goes for any of our players. No bids are in actively, at the moment, that I am aware of, and I have been told that by two very well placed sources.

“If we sell Gus Hamer it will be a club decision, not him forcing a move, he’s trying to get out.

“As it stands he is our highest earner and if he signs a new deal, which is still a possibility, that would be Sheffield United choosing to invest six, maybe seven million quid in a three year deal of a player who is already here because he’s our highest earner and that’s the amount of money it’s going to cost.

“And potentially we would be losing out on a fee of what could be £8m-£10m if a Premier League club comes calling. So essentially, it’s a £16m investment if we want to keep Gus Hamer, if you look at it in a business context, and that’s how the club have to weigh this up.”

He added: “There’s a world where he goes for free but I think it’s the least likely scenario.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports are today reporting that a deal is ‘close’.

The broadcaster claims: “Coventry are close to agreeing a deal with Sheffield United to re-sign Gustavo Hamer.

“The midfielder has one year left on his deal. The 29-year-old moved to Coventry in July 2020 from PEC Zwolle. He spent three years at the club, before moving to Sheffield United – who had been promoted to the Premier League – in August 2023.”

Zan Vipotnik and Ronald

Freelance football reporter Sam C, with over 174k followers on X claims that the Sky Blues are among a number of clubs interested in the Swansea striker who finished as the Championship’s leading scorer with 23 goals last season.

Writing on X, he said: “Coventry City are among those interested in Žan Vipotnik, but a deal is not currently close.

“Swansea City’s valuation is proving too high at this stage, with all interested clubs unwilling to meet their demands. Two other Premier League clubs, plus sides from Portugal, Italy and the Netherlands, are also in the race. The expectation is Swansea could lower their asking price later in the window as the deadline approaches.”

Journalist James Hokery, who writes for The Lower Tiers which has over 59k followers on X, as well as The Athletic, also makes the claim, while also linking City with interest in a second Swansea star, winger Ronald

He posted on X: “Coventry City are eyeing a double swoop for Swansea duo Ronald and Žan Vipotnik with talks ongoing with representatives of both parties. Frank Lampard understood to be keen to strengthen attack with club looking to move on Haji Wright.”

Meanwhile, Brazilian journalist João Van Boysen is also claiming that Coventry are interested in Ronald, having “joined Brazilian giants Corinthians and clubs from Saudi Arabia in monitoring the 25-year-old.”

Our sister title WalesOnLine report that at this stage, there is no suggestion that Swansea have received a formal offer for Ronald, nor are any of the interested clubs believed to have advanced negotiations.

Instead, the report claims several sides are keeping tabs on the Brazilian as the transfer window gathers pace.
