Nuneaton and Bedworth could get new town council amid huge local government change

Published on

Town councils could be set up in Nuneaton and Bedworth in the wake of a huge local government change.

CoventryLive reported that the government has decided that two new councils – WarwickshIre North and Warwickshire South – should be in charge of council services in each of the areas – as part of its Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) proposals.

All of the existing councils will be scrapped and, as a result, one council will cover the north of Warwickshire, including Nuneaton and Bedworth, North Warwickshire, and Rugby. A second will cover the south of Warwickshire, including Stratford-on-Avon and Warwick.

Prior to the decision being made, it was mooted that Nuneaton and Bedworth could look into setting up town councils.

This would provide an uber local level of government for residents in the two towns.

Currently both Rugby and North Warwickshire have town and parish councils in place.

The borough is the only one without, however, historically, both towns had their own local councils.

Bedworth had Bedworth Urban District Council and Nuneaton had Nuneaton Municipal Borough

These two were merged in 1974 to create Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council

But new versions of what were the old town councils could be revived.

As yet, other than a joint statement from all six councils being issued, the borough council has yet to issue any official response to the government decision and what it plans to do going forward.

CoventryLive asked the Town Hall if there were any plans to begin discussions on possible new town councils as part of the new North Council set-up.

We were told that no decisions have been made as yet but the council, back in February, did decide to defer any full council decision to initiate a Community Governance Review, which could include Town Councils, until the government has issued its decision on the he future structure or local government within Warwickshire.

This indicates that the issue will be discussed at a full council meeting., There are no full council meetings planned for August but there is one pencilled in for September.

However, the agenda for this has yet to be published.
