A Coventry takeaway has been given a one-star hygiene rating after inspectors highlighted issues with food handling. Eastern Star in Wyken was urged to make improvements after shortcomings were identified in its existing procedures.
Officials from Coventry City Council visited Eastern Star on Ansty Road in June. Standards around hygienic food handling needed to be improved.
Concerns were raised about how food was handled during cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage. Cleanliness at the takeaway was also found to be below the expected standard.
Issues were found with the condition of the premises and facilities used to support good food hygiene. Further shortcomings were identified with the effectiveness of the food safety management systems.
Measures designed to ensure that food sold to customers was safe to eat were found to be inadequate. Staff also had insufficient knowledge of food safety practices.
Inspectors said they had doubts over whether standards would be maintained. Coventry City Council is assisting the business in making the necessary improvements to meet food hygiene requirements.
A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “Based on the standards of food hygiene found during the inspection on June 10, Eastern Star received a food hygiene rating of 1. We have continued to work with the business to ensure that food safety laws are met, improvements are made, and the outlet is safe.
“Whilst improvements can be made by businesses following the inspection, they do not automatically alter the food hygiene rating score, but Eastern Star can apply for a re-rating. If Eastern Star does not apply for a re-rating, the rating will be reviewed and updated at the next planned inspection.”
