In this week’s nostalgia feature, we are looking back at a lost Coventry shop. The Dome Kiosk was a beloved landmark right in the heart of the Bull Yard, where locals would pop in to pick up sweets, newspapers and cards.

Its central location made it a handy stop for rail passengers making their way to the train station from Hertford Street.

We’ve unearthed photographs from our archive dating back to as early as 1965 of the old Dome, which housed a popular newsagent’s for decades. In those days, Bull Yard served as a thoroughfare onto Shelton Square, though it was later pedestrianised.

The building adjoining the Dome subsequently became home to the well-loved bar, The Yard. And as a reminder that nothing stands still in Coventry for long, The Yard has since relocated to the former Metropolis restaurant on Draper Street.

This is largely due to the significant redevelopment of the City Centre South scheme.
