Drivers Brace for Disruption: Three Weekends of Nuneaton Town Centre Road Closures Loom

Published on

Road users are being alerted to upcoming closures affecting traffic around Nuneaton’s central area over three consecutive weekends.

The restrictions had originally been scheduled to begin last weekend but have been rescheduled to commence this coming weekend, beginning on Friday, August 7.

The shutdown will cover the full stretch of Justice Walk, running from its intersection with Church Street through to Bond Gate.

This will additionally encompass its intersection with Wheat Street, which branches off Vicarage Street.

The work forms part of the scheme that kicked off in May, involving the conversion of the existing three-arm junction where Wheat Street meets Vicarage Street into a new four-way configuration that will ultimately enable vehicles to access Justice Walk.

Warwickshire County Council, the scheme’s promoter, has stated that the closures are required to facilitate road resurfacing and utility service diversions.

The restrictions are scheduled as follows:

Commencing Friday, August 7 at 8pm through to Monday, August 10 at 4am

Commencing Friday, August 14 at 8pm through to Monday, August 17 at 4am

Commencing Friday, August 21 at 8pm through to Monday, August 24 at 4am

Construction at the Wheat Street and Vicarage Street junction has been progressing since May

The junction improvements at Wheat Street form part of the broader Transforming Nuneaton initiative, which encompasses substantial alterations to the nearby Leicester Road gyratory system.

It is intended to be redesigned as a new four-arm roundabout, with the current Empire Gym premises scheduled for demolition as part of the scheme.

The completed proposals for the significant programme have been presented by Warwickshire County Council, with a final determination on approval anticipated during the summer months.
