Tragedy as Coventry youth mentor dies aged just 36

Commemorations have been flooding in for a generous father who devoted his existence to assisting at-risk adolescents in Coventry. Simon Charles Rée held the position of chief executive at the Bardsley Youth Project.

Simon established the Bardsley Youth Project in 2013 with the aim of supporting individuals experiencing homelessness or residing in temporary accommodation. Those who knew him said he cared deeply about young people throughout Coventry.

Simon passed away on July 16, aged 36. Companion Matt Woodall is gathering contributions for his funeral arrangements and has already accumulated more than £1,500.

A representative for the Bardsley Youth Project said Simon was open about his emotions and deeply cared about Coventry’s young people. He made a significant impact on countless individuals throughout the city and dedicated his life to ensuring that nobody had to face their difficulties alone. The representative added that he will be deeply missed by the entire Bardsley community, staff members, board members, the young individuals they assist, and the wider neighbourhood. Anyone finding this news distressing was encouraged not to feel they must cope alone, and to visit one of their gatherings or contact staff members if needed. The representative noted that while they are grieving, they know Simon would have wanted the projects to continue, and the most meaningful way to honour him is to maintain their support for Coventry’s young people. They expressed gratitude for the compassion, assistance, and consideration shown as they commemorate Simon with all his remarkable individuality and what he meant to everyone.

Fellow worker Kim McMahon said Simon was the vital essence of Bardsley. She noted he will be missed for many reasons, and they will all endeavour to sustain Bardsley for as long as possible as a fitting tribute to a witty, generous, compassionate individual who passed away far too prematurely.

His memorial service will take place at Canley Crematorium at 10am on Tuesday, August 11. Those wishing to honour Simon’s memory are encouraged to assemble at The Town Crier on Corporation Street from approximately 2pm.

Contributions can be made through GoFundMe.
