The Council recently unveiled its Best Start in Life Strategy in collaboration with important local organisations, bringing together professionals and practitioners from across the city. This wide-ranging programme centres on an action plan designed to enhance child development, health, and educational outcomes for all children and their families from birth through to age five.

Cllr Mal Mutton, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, highlighted the programme’s vital significance and clear objective of assisting all children, parents, and carers, with a focus on early intervention, health and wellbeing, and reducing inequalities throughout the city. She emphasised that when children receive the optimal beginning, they have the greatest opportunity to achieve success. Through collaboration with families, communities, and partner organisations, Coventry can become a city where every child flourishes.

Jane Moffat, Early Help Operational Lead, described the initiative as Coventry’s commitment to ensuring every child starts life with the strongest possible foundations. She set out the vision for every child to feel secure, be healthy, remain curious, develop confidence, and be prepared to succeed at school by age five, regardless of background, circumstances, or requirements.

The Best Start in Life Strategy embodies the united dedication of local services encompassing health, education, charitable organisations, and community groups to collaborate in producing genuine, sustainable improvements for Coventry families. The approach focuses on providing every child with the chance to prosper, acknowledging that the initial years are fundamental in determining future outcomes. Primary priorities encompass boosting children’s school readiness; enhancing maternal and infant wellbeing; fostering strong bonds between parents and babies; strengthening early years education and childcare; detecting and responding to additional needs promptly; and narrowing health and developmental gaps. Central to this approach are Coventry’s Best Start Family Hubs, which serve a crucial function in offering accessible, coordinated assistance to families.

These hubs function as a unified gateway for families with children from pregnancy through to nineteen years old, or up to twenty-five for those with special requirements, delivering advice, services, and early intervention within welcoming community environments. They additionally co-deliver an extensive selection of services locally and through the online platform at www.coventryfamilies.co.uk
