A refreshed and lengthened number 20 route will operate daily until 11pm, providing supporters, event attendees and members of the public with transport to and from the CBS Arena and the railway station.
The enhanced service commences on Saturday August 29, coinciding with the Sky Blues’ initial top-flight home fixture following a quarter-century absence from the Premier League.
Transport for West Midlands is covering the initial costs of the extended operation, with provisions also made for additional matchday bus services during high-demand periods. The route stops within a brief stroll of the venue along Foleshill Road.
Previously, the service concluded at Trinity Street in the city centre, requiring passengers to walk a quarter of an hour to reach the train station and return.
Councillor Lynnette Kelly, the cabinet member responsible for employment, regeneration and climate matters at Coventry City Council, remarked that this development represents positive news for travelling supporters and local residents, as the number 20 route will now reach the railway station.
She explained that public transport proves most effective when integrated, and this illustrates how a modest adjustment can yield substantial benefits. She expressed satisfaction that Richard Parker and the TfWM team recognised the significance of this service extension and subsequently implemented it.
She added that the upcoming season promises excitement both on and off the field at CBS, with the club and the wider city prepared to welcome supporters from throughout the nation for top-flight encounters.
Richard Parker, the West Midlands Mayor, commented that the initiative aims to simplify and accelerate the journey for thousands of football enthusiasts when travelling by rail to and from Coventry.
He noted that these services would also operate late into the evening to assist the Arena’s goals of hosting additional concerts and performances, which would significantly benefit the city’s evening economy.
He observed that football forms an enormous component of people’s lives, which explains the multimillion-pound investment directed towards enhancing supporter travel on matchdays.
The launch of this extended route coincides with negotiations between the Mayor and WMCA regarding the acquisition of National Express West Midlands.
