Council clarifies why gritter deployed on Coventry street during 27C heat

A unusual situation unfolded on the outskirts of Coventry on Wednesday that prompted the council to deploy its road gritting team.

The city is currently experiencing extreme heat that has caused temperatures to soar across the area.

However, residents in the north western part of the city were surprised to spot one of the local authority’s gritting vehicles operating on local roads during Wednesday morning.

These vehicles are typically deployed during winter when icy conditions prevail, making their appearance in the middle of summer highly unexpected.

The exceptional circumstances called for exceptional action – reports emerged that Hollyfast Lane had been closed after approximately twenty containers of oil were discovered abandoned on the road.

Following the tip-off, council workers dispatched the gritting vehicle to the location within hours and began clearing the hazardous materials.

Coventry City Council subsequently posted photographs from the incident on social media platforms.

The accompanying text noted that passers-by in the vicinity of Hollyfast Lane might have been puzzled by the sight of a gritting vehicle working in temperatures of 27 degrees.

The post explained that the unusual equipment had been sent to address the aftermath of someone illegally dumping twenty oil drums along the carriageway.

According to the post, a local resident had alerted the council that the containers were scattered across the road. Council operatives arrived promptly at the location and cordoned off the area to prevent any accidents.

Since then, workers have been working without pause to restore the road to a safe condition. The post expressed gratitude to community members whose quick reporting enabled a swift response. A road closure order remains active and officials are urging drivers to steer clear of the zone.

Those with any knowledge of the dumping incident have been invited to submit information through anonymous reporting channels.

Jo Davis encountered the distressing sight at approximately 6am.

She described feeling extremely frustrated, stating that the behaviour was completely unacceptable and demonstrated a blatant disregard for everything.
