An alert has been issued as work on a three-month Coventry very light rail scheme begins today, on June 2.

Mile Lane is now shut between its intersection with the IRR Quinton Road Roundabout and its intersection with Thomas Landsail Street.

A recently issued traffic regulation confirms the closure is to facilitate construction of the pioneering very light rail network in the city.

The restriction on Mile Lane will stay in effect until Wednesday, September 30.

The regulation states that the order is required to enable the safe installation of the Coventry Very Light Rail slabs, tram rails and other associated works to take place safely.

As previously reported by CoventryLive, the system underwent trials on Greyfriars Road and Queen Victoria Road in May 2025.

Once complete, it will link Coventry Railway Station with the Technology Park and include a new service facility featuring a charging point on Mile Lane.

The local authority has stated the system is intended to operate alongside existing road traffic and is anticipated to commence full operations by October 2027.

The very light rail initiative is considered fundamental to Coventry’s goal of pioneering green transport development across the United Kingdom. Unlike conventional tram networks, the system is intended to be constructed in half the timeframe and at half the expense, eliminating the requirement to relocate underground infrastructure such as gas and water mains.
