How soon Coventry City can claim the Championship title

Published on

Coventry City face a momentous week in the club’s history, able to officially confirm their promotion back to the Premier League and follow that up by being crowned champions of the second tier. The Sky Blues could claim the Championship title as early as Sunday but, failing that, back-to-back wins would see them win the league on Tuesday night in front of home fans at the CBS Arena. Let’s look at the permutations. First and foremost, Frank Lampard’s men require just one more point to get a big fat P next to their name, so need to avoid defeat at Blackburn Rovers on Friday night under the lights. If City win or draw the game in front of an incredible 7,000 plus travelling Sky Blue Army at Ewood Park then they will confirm their automatic promotion with a guaranteed top two finish. The club will be on either 86 points if they draw or 88 if they win. FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK! They are already effectively up, of course, due to their plus 33 goal difference over the Lions. However, should they win then all eyes will then switch to Sunday when second placed Ipswich Town host Middlesbrough at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys had two games in hand over Coventry going into this week but lost their first on Tuesday night, suffering a 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth as Pompey eased their relegation fears at Fratton Park. If, and it is a big if, Town suffer another defeat in Sunday’s lunchtime kick-off with Boro then the Sky Blues will be crowned champions by virtue of the fact that, with four games left, the Suffolk club would only be able to get a total of 87 points. However, if Ipswich win (taking them to 78) or draw, (taking them to 76) then Coventry can secure the title on their own terms if they beat Pompey next Tuesday night. That would put them on 91 points. Kieran McKenna’s men can only get a maximum of 90 points if they win their remaining five matches.
