University Hospital in Coventry is calling on members of the public to share their recollections and images as the facility gears up to celebrate a significant landmark. This Thursday, July 30, marks precisely two decades since the hospital first began treating patients.
Personnel have already begun contributing personal anecdotes, pictures and narratives spanning the past twenty years, with a floral display titled 20 years in bloom having been installed on site.
Since its inauguration, the medical centre has witnessed countless life-changing events: births, treatment of family members, the beginnings of professional journeys and instances of community connection.
A dedicated memorial wall featuring recollections and team photographs has been established, with workers reflecting on the institution’s most significant occasions, such as when it hosted the planet’s inaugural Covid-19 immunisation outside of formal research studies during December 2020.
The facility commenced operations in 2006 and ranks among the continent’s most contemporary medical establishments, boasting over 900 patient beds, 26 surgical suites and specialist departments encompassing heart conditions, neurological procedures, stroke treatment, orthopaedic surgery, fertility services, obstetrics, diabetes management and renal transplantation. The trust also serves as a regional centre for severe injury cases and oncology services.
For employees present during the initial period, transitioning to the purpose-built site remains a particularly vivid recollection. This includes Hannah Stroude, currently Deputy Associate Director of Allied Health Professionals, who previously worked as an Occupational Therapist within the surgical division.
She began her tenure in April and described examining architectural blueprints and touring the premises to determine departmental locations. Staff members experienced considerable enthusiasm given the modern surroundings. Adjusting to the layout proved challenging, as workers could not readily guide patients while simultaneously familiarising themselves with the new environment. However, clinical responsibilities remained unchanged and normal working patterns were quickly established.
Professor Andy Hardy, Chief Executive Officer at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, explained that the commemoration extends beyond the physical structure to honour those who have provided treatment, employment, training, voluntary services, visits and support throughout the twenty-year period. He emphasised that advances in medical practice and collaborative efforts have equally contributed to enhancing care provision for patients and local populations.
The hospital welcomes contributions from anyone possessing relevant memories or imagery that illuminate the institution’s history. Submitted materials will assist in recognising the relationships, accomplishments and personal narratives that define the hospital’s character.
Individuals wishing to participate should forward their contributions to communications@uhcw.nhs.uk, providing their name, contact information and a brief explanation of the background to their submission. Those submitting photographs must ensure appropriate consent has been obtained from identifiable individuals appearing in the images.
