A Coventry MP has said she is ‘delighted’ that Andy Burnham has taken on the role of Prime Minister.
The former Manchester Mayor, who returned to Westminster last month after winning the Makerfield by-election, was formally confirmed as the UK’s new Prime Minister today, Monday, July 20, following an audience with King Charles.
Mary Creagh CBE, MP for Coventry East, welcomed the news. In a statement she said: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Andy Burnham as our new Prime Minister. I worked as his Parliamentary Private Secretary back in 2007-08, and then in 2009-10 as his whip when he was Health Secretary. He is a politician absolutely rooted in place.
“I was really pleased to hear his speech on the steps of No.10. He will be laser-focused on tackling the cost-of living crisis, building a new political and economic model for our country, and the need to restore trust in politics.
“I welcome his first announcement as Prime Minister on the moral mission to end rough sleeping on our street, it really is a stain on the conscience of the nation.”
Mr Burnham becomes the UK’s seventh prime minister in the 10 years since the Brexit referendum, following the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer, who has served as Prime Minister since Labour won the 2024 General Election.
In his first speech he pledged to give people ‘breathing room’ against the rising cost of living.
