A progress report has been issued regarding a delayed new primary school development in Nuneaton, with the project valued at £16m.
CoventryLive first reported earlier this year that Watling Meadows Primary School, originally scheduled to welcome pupils this September, has experienced setbacks.
Instead of beginning their schooling at the new campus, reception pupils will temporarily receive their education at Higham Lane North secondary school from September onwards.
Planning consent had to be obtained for the temporary classroom facilities before the children could begin attending.
A representative from Warwickshire County Council confirmed that the intention remains for pupils to commence at the Higham Lane North site at the beginning of the new academic year.
The interim arrangement involves opening the school at Higham Lane North with plans confirmed for this to proceed in September, according to the spokesperson.
Construction of the new school building is expected to be completed in early 2027, with the council set to work alongside the Trust and building contractor to coordinate the most suitable time for pupils to transfer to the permanent facilities.
When is the new school expected to be operational?
The Central England Academy Trust, which will manage the new primary school, has stated that the objective remains for pupils and staff to relocate to their permanent, purpose-built school during the spring term.
Andrew Dickinson, chief executive officer of the trust, said in a statement that they are eagerly anticipating greeting the inaugural group of Watling Meadows pupils this September.
The temporary facilities at Higham Lane North have consistently formed part of their planned opening strategy and will deliver an excellent environment for children to commence their educational journey with them, according to the CEO.
It was delightful to observe children touring the new school site and sharing in the enthusiasm about what lies ahead.
The chief executive’s statement adds that they continue to progress as planned for pupils to transfer to the new building during the spring term, and they appreciate the ongoing backing from families as they establish an exceptional new school for the community.
