Average speed detection devices are set to be installed throughout Coventry after the precise installation points were formally revealed. This road safety scheme encompasses the A444 corridor along with Hawkesbury and Eastern Green districts.
The local publication had previously reported that various routes throughout the city would incorporate average speed monitoring technology, though officials had stated that the exact positions were still being evaluated. The selection of five locations across the city has now been confirmed.
Fresh road observation technology is planned for Shilton Lane, Lentons Lane, Sky Blue Way, the A444, and Broad Lane, although the specific start date for fitting work has yet to be determined. The devices will measure how fast vehicles travel to improve safety on these significant routes.
Elected officials indicated the speed monitoring systems aim to improve road safety, which they characterised as the top priority. Councillor Gary Ridley, from the Coventry Conservative group, has supported the proposed Broad Lane devices and has pushed for their installation over a number of years.
Councillor Patricia Hetherton outlined that the goal is to tackle dangerous driving practices and offer improved safeguards for pedestrians and cyclists. She highlighted that bringing down vehicle speeds on busy roads would help prevent serious injuries.
She explained that the authority is partnering with West Midlands Police to implement average speed monitoring on selected main roads within the city because this approach modifies driver conduct, establishing safer conditions for both those on foot and in vehicles. She stated that this measure prevents the serious injuries that result from vehicles moving at inappropriate speeds, and emphasised that for those who have lost young family members, the grief endures permanently.
A council representative noted that road safety represents their primary concern, acknowledging its importance to local residents. With funding confirmed, plans are in place to establish new average speed enforcement zones while maintaining ongoing investment in road repairs and improvements.
