A fresh procedure at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton means individuals no longer need to attend separate visits. A Transnasal Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Endoscopy unit has opened at the facility. It is operational from the Community Diagnostic Centre and provides a comprehensive diagnostic experience for those sent with symptoms requiring prompt examination, encompassing individuals on the suspected cancer rapid diagnosis pathway. Hospital officials explained that in the past, people might have needed to visit the hospital several times for an outpatient appointment and a diagnostic test.

The new development enables patients to undergo evaluation and investigations during a single attendance, cutting waiting periods and eliminating repeat journeys to the hospital. Dr. Edmond Sung, Consultant Gastroenterologist and General Physician at the trust, stated that the team is pleased with this initiative which provides a secure and tolerable endoscopic examination while allowing swift diagnosis, improving patient care through innovation.

The technique, referred to as Transnasal Endoscopy (TNE), employs a more compact camera than earlier methods and is guided through the nostril instead of the mouth – rendering the examination more agreeable for numerous patients and frequently removing the necessity for sedative medication. Ruchi Joshi, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at the trust, remarked that this represents positive news – a valuable addition enabling the provision of patient-focused treatment and optimising the entire care process as effectively as possible.

The initiative was established using £255,000 in funding from NHS England.
