New waste collection regulations take effect starting today (March 31) – here’s what Coventry residents need to know.
The updates stem from legislative changes at the national level aimed at harmonizing waste collection methods throughout England.
Previously, county and second-tier local authorities managed waste disposal services, with practices varying from one region to another.
The government has implemented its Simpler Recycling Reforms with goals of increasing recycling participation and establishing uniform regulations nationwide.
Coventry City Council has announced that households will be receiving new wheeled bins.
What the regulations require?
According to UK Government requirements, starting March 31, waste collection services in England must gather the following materials separately:
food and garden waste
paper and cardboard
all other dry recyclable items (glass, metals, plastics, and cartons)
residual waste (non-recyclable materials destined for energy recovery or landfill)
Bin requirements
Consumer organization Which? indicates that English kerbside collections will now require four distinct bins. In March 2027, local authorities will introduce a fifth bin specifically for soft plastics and films, encompassing plastic bags, food sachets and pouches, as well as crisp and biscuit wrappers.
What this means for Coventry residents?
No immediate changes. While the national regulations become effective today, Coventry City Council will not begin distributing the new bins until June, and the new collection system won’t operate in the city until September.
CoventryLive will provide additional information on modifications to bin collection services in Coventry as further details emerge.
