Doug King statement as Frank Lampard and Coventry City players prepare for open-top bus parade

Published on

Coventry City owner Doug King has sent a message to Sky Blues fans ahead of the huge ‘We Are Back: Live’ event on Monday.

Coventry’s promotion to the Premier League and Championship title win under Frank Lampard will be celebrated in the city, with an open-top bus parade from the club’s stadium, the CBS Arena, through the streets to the War Memorial Park where a sold-out ‘We Are Back: Live’ festival will be headlined by The Enemy and Tom Grennan.

It promises to be a memorable day in the Sky Blues’ history and King wants it to be safe and enjoyable for all supporters and has warned against the use of pyrotechnics.

“The Football Club and indeed the whole City, is looking forward to “We Are Back: Live” on Monday,” he said.

“We have enjoyed some incredible memories with our supporters in the last couple of weeks, celebrating promotion, winning the Championship title, and then lifting the trophy in front of our packed stadium last Sunday. We all know how much your unbelievable support played in this season’s success.

“Your cooperation in allowing these on-field celebrations to go on extensively without any hitch or disruption made the moments not only incredibly special for the players but also allowed everyone to watch and partake in the excitement whether in the stadiums or watching at home.

“It has needed huge support and effort, not just from the Club, but from many other stakeholders to enable Monday’s parade and We Are Back: Live at War Memorial Park to go ahead.

“In one safety meeting on Friday, there were one hundred and twenty-five interested parties being briefed!

“There have unfortunately been incidents at recent large-scale events such as ours so can I request that all our Sky Blues fans show the same passion and respect on Monday that you have done recently to ensure everyone can enjoy the celebrations safely.

“I would like to remind you that pyrotechnics are very dangerous if used incorrectly and can also cause respiratory discomfort to supporters if they are inhaled.

“They can also cause physical harm as well. For example, one young Sky Blues fan was involved in an incident at the final game of the season with his back burned and his shirt ruined by someone with a handheld pyrotechnic. This is not the memory that this eight-year-old was expecting or should have experienced on this epic day.

“Additionally, the Club has received information from the EFL that dangerous, unstable pyrotechnics have been imported into the country that present an extremely serious risk, so please, leave the pyrotechnics to the event organisers and enjoy the moment, ensuring that the memories for everyone are good ones.”

“It is set to be a fantastic day, we want everyone to celebrate our promotion back to the Premier League in a safe, enjoyable manner to seal this great moment with all the right memories and sign this achievement off in style,” he added.
