The GMB union has criticized Birmingham Airport’s amenities for taxi drivers as shameful, calling for improvements to the current situation.
The organization, which represents numerous private hire vehicle drivers, has pressed airport management to enhance working conditions.
According to the union, drivers encounter unacceptable situations, particularly regarding restroom cleanliness while waiting to pick up travelers.
The union highlighted that private hire drivers must pay hourly charges while stationary at the terminal. A driver survey uncovered several issues:
Restrooms covered in dirt and refuse
Absence of driver rest zones except for paid parking structures
Malfunctions in automated payment equipment resulting in substantial penalties reaching £500
The survey also addressed shortcomings for drivers observing religious practices during Ramadan. The union reported that without appropriate spaces, drivers had to perform prayers on parking level surfaces.
According to Birmingham Live, an NCP parking error at the airport recently caused private hire driver Ian Cook to receive an erroneous invoice approximating £2,000, which was immediately withdrawn from his account. The amount remained unreturned for six days.
GMB representative Kate Gorton stated: “Private hire vehicles form a vital part of contemporary airports.
It is truly shameful that the personnel operating these services must endure such inadequate conditions at Birmingham Airport.
This facility ranks among the nation’s busiest terminals yet cannot seem to provide fundamental waiting spaces or amenities to maintain operations.
The provisions for our members are so insufficient that during this Ramadan period, we received reports from drivers who were compelled to conduct their religious observances on the cold, damp, soiled surface of a parking structure.
If numerous other UK airports manage to supply basic amenities and waiting areas, why must our Birmingham members tolerate unsanitary lavatories while paying for the experience?
We urge private hire drivers throughout the Birmingham Airport region to participate in our campaign to secure the services our members deserve.”
Airport representatives were reached for response.
