Cleanliness problems identified at Coventry retailer as ‘improvements necessary’

Published on

A Coventry retailer has been ordered to make improvements after receiving a two-star hygiene rating. Several problems were found at Babylon Mini Market in Foleshill.

Inspectors visited Babylon Mini Market on Foleshill Road in February. Cleanliness was found to be below acceptable standards, according to Coventry City Council.

Concerns were also raised over the facilities and the building. Areas assessed included the layout, pest control and handwashing facilities to ensure proper food hygiene.

Inspectors found that food safety management was adequate but could be improved. Systems to ensure food sold is safe to eat were satisfactory, according to Coventry City Council.

Staff were rated highly for hygienic food handling. Coventry City Council said it has worked with the business to ensure it complies with food safety regulations.

A spokesman for Coventry City Council said: “All businesses that sell food in Coventry are inspected by Coventry City Council. Businesses are risk-rated and given a score for the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS).

“Based on the standards of food hygiene found during the inspection on February 4, Babylon Mini Market received a food hygiene rating of 2, meaning improvement was necessary. We have continued to work with the business to ensure that food safety laws are met, improvements are made, and the outlet is safe.

“Whilst improvements can be made by businesses following the inspection, they do not automatically alter the food hygiene rating score, but Babylon Mini Market can apply for a re-rating. If Babylon Mini Market does not apply for a re-rating, the rating will be reviewed and updated at the next planned inspection.”
