Carl Rushworth transfer latest as Brighton ‘explore’ goalkeeper market ahead of summer window

Published on

It’s no secret that Coventry City would love to upgrade Carl Rushworth’s loan deal to a permanent contract ahead of the club’s return to the Premier League . There are a lot of moving parts to any potential deal with the Sky Blues , however, not least the fact that his parent club Brighton and Hove Albion could well themselves be looking for a new goalkeeper this summer. Albion’s current first choice Bart Verbruggen has already been the subject of plenty of speculation, and a decent World Cup campaign for the Netherlands will only increase the stock of the £50m rated player. However, according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg , Brighton are “exploring the goalkeeper market and keeping various options under consideration.” Plettenberg states that Verbruggen, whose contract is up in 2028, “could leave” the Seagulls this summer amid “interesting enquiries” on the table. In another post on social media platform X, the sports correspondent claims that: “Noah Atubolu is on Brighton’s shortlist for next season,” albeit, he says the 23-year-old is “not their top option, but still quite high on the list.” He adds that Atubolu – whom he says has the reputation of being one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga this season – is “expected to leave SC Freiburg this summer, or at the latest in 2027 on a free transfer.” Doug King attempted to buy Rushworth last summer when he had a bid understood to be around the £6m mark turned down by Brighton who were looking for nearer £10m at the time. Now, nine months on and after an outstanding campaign helping City to promotion back to the Premier League, the 24-year-old is rated between £15m-£20m. Brighton, meanwhile, are reported to be seeking to sign Rushworth on a new long-term contract, with his current deal having just one year remaining. It’s understood, however, that Rushworth has made it clear he will only commit his future if he is guaranteed the No.1 role. Rushworth wants assurances over regular first-team football before making a decision on his next move.
