An exciting summer is in store for Coventry City after the club was projected to break its transfer record “on multiple occasions.” That’s according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who envisions a pre- Premier League preparation involving major spending. The Sky Blues could have their ascent back to England’s top flight confirmed tonight, when they make the trip to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers. Just a point will be enough to secure promotion. In the event City live up to their promise by returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2001, Maguire envisions a summer spree is inevitable. And the University of Liverpool lecturer explained the monetary ramifications behind getting out of the Championship. “So there’s a minimum of £100m there,” he told CoventryLive while discussing this summer’s prospects. “I think you can add an extra £15m to £20m for the commercial side of the club, because that front-of-shirt deal will become that much more attractive because you’re being broadcast to almost 200 countries around the world. And you’re acting as a billboard. FOLLOW ON FACEBOOK! So you’ve got all of those positives. The club will be able to charge more for the hospitality packages, the corporate prices and so on.” Maguire went on to detail how owner Doug King should see “60 per cent” of that cash injection towards the end of June. In addition to any funds the club may have already set aside for squad investment, it should lay the foundation for a surge in upscaling. “So, yes, there’ll be a huge step up,” he continued. “The club’s transfer record will be broken on multiple occasions over the course of the summer, in all probability. So it’s very exciting times for the Coventry fans in general.” It was earlier in the year that King’s side announced pre-tax losses of £21.6m for the 2024-25 financial year. And while Maguire has conceded those figures make for “scary” reading, Coventry remain in a promising financial position overall. The club’s current transfer record remains the £7.7m that was spent to acquire Haji Wright from Antalyaspor in 2023. Craig Bellamy held the previous record for more than 20 years after he joined from Norwich City in a £6.5m move back in 2000. That illustrates just how conservative the club has been in keeping its biggest player expenditures relatively modest. And it could put Frank Lampard in a fine position to open the financial floodgates somewhat this summer. Sunderland went on the offensive with their spending last summer and have been rewarded. After knocking Lampard’s out in the play-off final, the Black Cats made the five most expensive deals in their history and are now safe from relegation with time to spare. A similar tactic could go down well with fans as the Sky Blues as they look to form a bedrock among England’s elite once more. However, that comes with the added risk of being left on shaky ground should those investments fail to bear fruit.
