Former player booed as Leicester City fans voice disapproval

The match proved challenging for Coventry City until the final whistle, but the team managed to earn a 1-1 draw at Blackburn, securing their return to the Premier League. The Sky Blues had difficulty adapting to Frank Lampard’s tactical adjustments throughout most of the contest. After falling behind 1-0 due to Ryoya Morishita’s goal for Rovers, Lampard made three substitutions that shifted momentum back in Coventry’s favor. In the closing stages, with just six minutes left, Bobby Thomas rose to meet Victor Torp’s free kick and headed the ball into the net. This moment finalized what had seemed inevitable throughout the season. After 25 years away, the club is back in the top flight. Here are some highlights from an unremarkable match but a significant celebration.

The festivities began well before kick-off as Rovers honored former players on the pitch and through the stadium announcer. While figures like Tyrhys Dolan and Don Mackay failed to capture the attention of the 7,000 visiting supporters in the Darwen End, Tim Sherwood’s return drew a strong reaction. Sherwood had been instrumental when Rovers claimed the Premier League title in the early 1990s. His stint as a Coventry player in 2004 proved far less impactful, with the midfielder earning a substantial salary, battling injuries, and departing before completing his two-year deal. The 57-year-old former player was greeted with loud jeers from the away supporters.

Yuki Ohashi played a notable role in the early proceedings. The Blackburn forward received a yellow card for a highly reckless challenge on Matt Grimes. The tackle was genuinely poor. Ohashi also nearly struck Frank Onyeka with an ill-advised overhead kick that had feet dangerously close to the midfielder’s face. Such contact would have given referee Lewis Smith—praised as the ‘star of the show’ by Michael O’Neill afterward—a difficult decision to make. Shortly after, he squandered a clear opportunity, sending a free header directly at Carl Rushworth.

The match carried significant tension, with Coventry battling for promotion while Rovers fought to avoid relegation. Onyeka endured significant physical attention from the home team. Around the midpoint of the first half, Yuri Ribeiro pushed him to the ground from behind, earning a booking and provoking an angry response from the midfielder. In the second half, Taylor Gardner-Hickman knocked him over and also received a caution for his foul on the former Brentford player. When Rovers’ Moussa Baradji remained on the ground in City’s half for 90 seconds while play continued at the other end, it appeared Gardner-Hickman was attempting to force the referee’s whistle. He subsequently pushed Onyeka and extended a helping hand, which the Nigerian player flatly rejected.

The Coventry supporters fully embraced the significance of the occasion. After 12 minutes, they launched into a rendition of ‘City going up and the Leicester going down’ set to the melody of Yellow Submarine. Though they had hoped for a victory, having secured the necessary point, they might not begrudge Blackburn their own result, as it lifts the home team five points clear of the relegation zone and eight points ahead of Leicester. Just months ago, Leicester was a Premier League club while Coventry was dealing with playoff heartbreak. In a few weeks, City will be competing in the top tier, while their M69 rivals could find themselves two divisions lower in League One.
