Frank Lampard on Coventry City’s historic night as Sky Blues crowned Champions

Frank Lampard says Coventry City’s Championship title win is right up there with the best moments in his career. The Sky Blues limped over the automatic promotion line with a 1-1 come-back draw at Blackburn Rovers on Friday but the shackles were off back at the CBS Arena where they blew away Portsmouth with a 5-1 thrashing to become champions of the second tier with two games to spare. An early goal from Haji Wright sparked the celebrations but when Ephron Mason-Clark rattled in City’s second straight after the break, swiftly followed by an own goal to make it 3-0, the roof came off with chants of “Championees, championees…” ringing around the stadium. The last few weeks have been challenging in a way because of the pressure, because we’re not used to this and we’ve got the results we needed recently to get us promoted. “We’ve shown that when we’re here and in good form we can grab a game and we grabbed it, and we put it to bed very emphatically. It was a fitting way for the fans to celebrate being champions of the league.” He added: “It was just a great night, it was so nice because we had the jeopardy of Friday night, which in a weird way was great the way we did it, the way Bobby rose and gets the header and the 7000+ fans had that. That was amazing in its own right. “This is amazing in its own right, this it what I really, really wanted because we led the table for so long and pushed on this second half of the season as it’s gone on. That takes a really strong unit and a strong group and they’ve shown that. “When you get this close, to go and do it with two games to spare is incredible, because this league gets harder.” Every day, the CoventryLive football desk strive to deliver all manner of news, features and transfer-related stories as a part of our overall package of Coventry City content.
