Bright green parcel lockers leave Coventry residents puzzled

Published on

Residents of a peaceful dead-end road in Coventry have expressed outrage after a bright green parcel collection point was installed, with neighbours insisting it has remained completely unused since appearing. According to coverage by CoventryLive, households on Arne Road in Walsgrave were bewildered when the large structure was erected on their quiet street on April 10. The battery and solar-powered delivery hub comes from Yeep!, a company providing collection lockers, yet sits roughly half a mile from the nearest retail outlet. Local inhabitants say they were initially informed a concrete base had been laid for a new grit store, only to discover the 8-foot (2.4-metre) structure positioned just metres from their homes. John and Suzanna Davies, who live a few doors away from the installation, maintain it has never been operational. The 77-year-old resident explained that all locals are deeply distressed about the situation. He noted the structure stands on grassland that residents maintain themselves, with gardens kept immaculate and pride taken in the neighbourhood. When the estate was constructed, small plots of land existed and a company held the title to them. These were offered for purchase and residents acquired them. An individual from Kenilworth obtained this particular plot. Several months prior, he was excavating in the soil and when questioned about his activities, claimed the council had requested the work as they were fitting a grit container. The couple believed this was an excellent idea since such containers are always necessary. A concrete base was laid but then this enormous box appeared. He completely misled everyone so he could install it without their awareness or opposition. Nobody can understand this, as it is not near a supermarket. People cannot conveniently visit to collect and return parcels. It sits in front of someone’s property, blocking their front window and creating an obstruction. It is in a residential area and no planning permission has been granted. It was erected approximately two weeks ago yet nobody knows who is meant to use it. No activity has been observed in that period. A bingo hall approximately half a mile away has a supermarket with multiple lockers already installed. So why is this one needed here when there is nothing nearby? The council attended the following day and stated they would make every effort to move it. Suzanna Davies, a 57-year-old mother of one who works in administrative and financial positions at a school, said it was disgraceful. She and her husband were on holiday and upon returning found it there, positioned right in the centre. All residents care about where they live. There are attractive flowers and everyone helps with mowing, which will now be considerably more difficult. The area has only resident parking, creating increased traffic risk and danger to children. Who wants to live near something like this? Lynda Congrave, aged 79, who has resided on the street for four decades, believes the locker creates a hazard for local children. She said she could not believe it stands directly outside her living room window. It is dreadful. She used to be able to look across to her friend in the road but now cannot see past this structure. It blocks her view from this window and she is extremely concerned about young children who play in the area. She has no issue with them but if vehicles come speeding down to deliver parcels, they are just young children. They might run out and someone could be struck. Nobody wants that risk here. Coventry City Council has confirmed the installation is currently being examined to establish whether it was put up without necessary permissions. A representative for Coventry City Council said there was nothing further to add at this stage, the matter was under investigation and officers had contacted the landowner and the locker company. Yeep! was contacted for a response.
