Water sports site found in Nuneaton but sea cadets still homeless

Published on

A potential new location for water-based activities could be established in Nuneaton. The site under consideration is Bar Pool Brook along Queen Elizabeth Road. However, this future plan will not address the immediate challenges confronting the Nuneaton and Bedworth Sea Cadets group.

The organisation, which traces its roots to the adoption of HMS Vanquisher in 1942, currently faces difficulties because there is no suitable water facility within the borough. Consequently, members must make the journey to Shustoke to participate in water activities. This situation creates problems ranging from financial pressures to concerns about volunteer exhaustion.

Eva Thompson, who serves as a Petty Officer with the Sea Cadet Corps in the area, addressed a cabinet meeting regarding the difficulties they encounter. She explained that they have had to raise their subscription fees, arrange transportation, and cope with increased fuel expenses. Initially, no transport could be provided, and while they now have a minibus available, it only accommodates ten cadets out of their total of thirty, making the logistics of transporting everyone to Shustoke an enormous challenge. During the current boating season, they cannot take on additional cadets or even operate at full capacity because the necessary facilities and infrastructure are lacking. Numerous young people and families repeatedly contact them seeking to join, yet they cannot accommodate this demand. The additional strain is causing volunteers to experience burnout, which affects both their home lives and professional responsibilities. Everyone involved gives their time voluntarily, with all activities carried out outside working hours, representing an commitment that exceeds full-time employment. Due to the considerable distance to their current water access point, both volunteers and cadets often do not return home until well past 11pm, which is unfair to the young people who must stay up so late to take part in boating activities. Having local facilities would substantially alleviate these pressures.

Councillor Christian Smith advocated for access to Bermuda Lake, but officials confirmed this option has been excluded from consideration. Cabinet members expressed their commitment to assisting the group and indicated ongoing support for identifying private water bodies that could be used.

The council approved proposals allowing Borough Lottery funds to establish a community fund specifically for organisations providing youth advocacy services where access to open water is essential, such as sea cadet units. Officials also indicated that Bar Pool Brook on Queen Elizabeth Road could potentially serve as a water sports venue, a suggestion that was both unexpected and encouraging to the volunteers present.

One volunteer commented that it was encouraging to hear progress being made in the right direction. She emphasised the importance of planning for the future and what can be offered to young people, describing it as an excellent opportunity not only for sea cadets but for other organisations as well. Having facilities within the borough would eliminate the need for transport, cut costs, reduce strain on volunteers, and make volunteering a more attractive option for prospective helpers. This would enable the unit to increase its cadet capacity, allow more time on the water, develop greater skills among young people, and enable them to obtain higher-level qualifications. There may also be potential to accommodate a Royal Marine cadets attachment. She stressed that the organisation requires support and investment to ensure its long-term viability for local young people.

Additionally, it was agreed that the council leader would contact Warwickshire County Council to investigate whether a previously proposed Flood Alleviation Attenuation Lake Scheme could be revived within the borough, with consideration given to whether it could also support recreational water use. This scheme had previously been shelved in 2023 due to financial considerations.
