This situation exists because the permanent car park is intended to be constructed on the former leisure centre grounds, which has not yet been demolished. However, the scheme for the new car park has required modification following an assessment of parking bay dimensions. The original bay measurements are now considered insufficient due to the increase in larger vehicles and electric cars, making expanded bays necessary.

A council document states this adjustment would give users additional room and ease when parking and entering or exiting their vehicles, with particular thought given to elderly individuals and carers with small children visiting the facility. The modification will result in fewer parking spots, dropping from 134 to 122, and carries a price tag of approximately £20,000.

The council document notes this expense falls outside the current project parameters and therefore necessitates independent funding. While contingency reserves exist within the overall project budget that could absorb this change at this point, there is a chance that as work advances, these funds might be required for other unexpected expenditure. If deploying contingency funds leads to a project overspend, council officers could potentially need to approach Cabinet again to secure an additional £20,000 to address this shortfall.
