Question Time audience laughs as Reform UK figure faces pothole questions

Published on

A senior figure from Reform UK was questioned during a BBC Question Time broadcast this week regarding expenditure on road damage repairs in North Warwickshire. The programme’s presenter Fiona Bruce pressed home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf about allegations that funds directed towards addressing potholes in North Warwickshire had decreased by over half. The allegations were posted on the website of local Labour parliamentarian Rachel Taylor, who holds the seat for North Warwickshire and Bedworth. Her website statement indicated that pothole-related expenditure in North Warwickshire had declined by more than 50 percent since Reform UK gained control of the county council in 2025, along with a 39 percent reduction in Nuneaton and Bedworth. Taylor argued this represented an overall reduction of £1.9m in pothole repair spending since Reform assumed leadership, and pointed out that this occurred despite Warwickshire receiving over £7m in additional funding from central government specifically allocated for pothole remediation.

Bruce pressed Yusuf on these figures and their accuracy. He eventually acknowledged that he was not fully briefed on those specific details, which prompted laughter from the studio audience.

Bruce then questioned Yusuf about whether he could confirm the 50 percent reduction. He responded that evaluating a council purely on absolute spending figures was not the appropriate metric, and that residents were more concerned about service quality. When Bruce interrupted, insisting people raise pothole issues frequently and demanding a straight answer on whether council spending on potholes had been cut by half, Yusuf replied that managing a department based on maximising expenditure would be poor governance. He stated that a significant issue facing the country was the wasteful use of public money, and that Reform had advocated for more efficient utilisation of funds designated for pothole repairs. He explained that contracts awarded by councils to contractors for pothole work frequently lacked quality requirements and guarantees, which contrasted sharply with practices in countries proficient at this, citing the United Arab Emirates as an example. He mentioned he had personally overseen such improvements.

Bruce persisted, asking once more whether pothole spending under Reform in North Warwickshire had dropped by more than half. Yusuf responded that he did not have that specific information at hand.
