A Reform UK hopeful from Coventry has declared her confidence that the party can secure victory and assume leadership of the city council during the forthcoming local elections. Jackie Gardiner serves as an incumbent councillor representing Sherbourne ward and forms part of Reform’s roster of 54 candidates standing in Coventry on May 7. The political group has nominated candidates across every vacant position.

Currently, Cllr Gardiner and Cllr Marcus Lapsa, who represents the area formerly known as Westwood ward but now designated as Tile Hill and Canley, constitute Reform’s sole representation on the council.

According to projections from the Pollcheck website, Reform is forecast to secure an additional 23 seats, resulting in a majority of 25. This would place the ruling Labour administration in second position with 19 seats, representing a reduction of 20 from their current standing. Although this constitutes the most favourable prediction recorded for the party in the city, it still falls below the threshold of 28 or more seats required for complete control.

Nevertheless, Cllr Gardiner has rejected these pre-election forecasts, asserting that Reform’s internal information suggests the party is positioned to achieve full governance of Coventry City Council. She explained that numerous external entities conduct polling and analysis, yet the party does not rely on such predictions because they depend on algorithmic calculations and assumptions that frequently prove inaccurate. Reform instead focuses on direct engagement with residents through door-to-door outreach, inquiring directly about voting intentions. She expressed doubt that poll-checking websites possess comparable resources or dedication to gathering accurate information. According to her assessment, their own information is reliable, which is why they anticipate gaining majority control of the council. She acknowledged that the actual outcome would remain uncertain until the count on May 8, but maintained her belief that taking control of the city council is entirely achievable.

Cllr Gardiner further noted that the May 2025 local election results, which demonstrated a substantial increase in Reform support compared to General Election levels, indicated the party was destined for a significant victory in Coventry. She cited that projections in May of the previous year had not anticipated Reform’s strong performance in those local elections. In Durham, while 18 percent supported Reform during the 2024 General Election, the party subsequently achieved a commanding majority in May. She pointed to Coventry Northwest and Northeast, where 18 percent voted for Reform in the 2024 General Election, and even Coventry South, which has traditionally leant more liberal or socialist in recent years, showed 16 percent support. She suggested this provided substantial evidence of genuine voter sentiment. If this translated to the local electoral landscape, she believed a Reform-led council was highly probable.

Cllr Gardiner added that while polling forecast websites operated with different algorithms and frequently contradicted one another, what remained clear was that Reform had consistently led in over 250 successive polls, placing them well ahead of all rivals. She expressed definite belief in their capacity to win. While certain wards would present fierce competition, this was standard, but overall victory was definitely within reach.
