A substantial infrastructure project in Coventry that was expected to span ten months has encountered setbacks. Construction on the subsequent section of the Willenhall cycleway along London Road had been scheduled to commence on Monday, June 1.

By Friday, the works remained listed as commencing on that date on the local authority’s roadworks portal, according to CoventryLive reporting.

However, Coventry city council has since announced that the project will now get underway on June 15.

The works are anticipated to continue for approximately ten months, extending into early the following year.

A council spokesperson stated that the authority is delighted to progress to the next stage of the Willenhall cycleway, enhancing safety and accessibility for all travellers connecting Coventry city centre with Tollbar End.

The initiative was developed incorporating suggestions from community members, and encompasses a purpose-built separated cycle route, a modernised junction featuring additional pedestrian crossings, enhanced bus facilities and updated road markings along London Road.

Construction is scheduled to commence on 15 June 2026, with additional enhancements planned for later this year at the ASDA roundabout. The objective is to enhance connectivity between Cheylesmore and Whitley.

Considerable investment has been directed towards promoting increased cycling among residents while simultaneously tackling climate change through an ongoing programme of separated cycle infrastructure.

Numerous components of the project are already complete or approaching finalisation, including the Coundon Cycleway, which connects the city centre with outlying areas, along with substantial sections of the Binley Cycleway.
