A major blaze that destroyed three residences in Coventry originated from a garden barbecue, according to investigators.

Firefighters from multiple stations across the area responded to the incident on Fielding Close in Walsgrave at approximately 2:45pm on Monday.

West Midlands Fire Service has officially determined the cause of the inferno.

According to the service, a gas barbecue ignited a fence, with the flames then extending to an outbuilding and subsequently reaching three properties. Crews continued working at the location until nearly midnight, extinguishing remaining hotspots. Approximately 25 percent of the roofing across the three houses was dismantled as part of the operation. Firefighters conducted several overnight inspections of the area.

On the subject of barbecue safety, a spokesperson emphasised that outdoor cooking can be secure and pleasant, though it is simple to become preoccupied with companions while preparing food. The spokesperson warned against applying petrol, methylated spirits or other flammable substances to a barbecue, noting that some of the most severe burns the service encounters occur when individuals do this and the appliance erupts unexpectedly in their direction.

Despite the scale of the fire, emergency services reported no serious casualties.

A representative from West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that crews were dispatched shortly before 3pm to the property on Fielding Close in the Sowe area of Coventry. A single ambulance responded. One firefighter was examined by paramedics but did not require additional medical attention, receiving advice on self-treatment before being released at the scene. A second individual refused paramedic assistance and was also given self-care guidance prior to discharge.
