Photographs obtained by Coventry Live reveal the scope of an oil spillage that has resulted in a road closure within the city.

Hollyfast Lane remains shut after approximately 20 oil canisters that were leaking were abandoned in the roadway.

It appears they were discarded there during the night, with residents stumbling upon them as early as 5.30am on Wednesday morning (8 July).

Coventry City Council responded promptly, dispatching a gritting vehicle to the location to absorb the leaked oil ahead of a road inspection.

The duration of the closure remains unclear, though a provisional traffic advisory has been published suggesting it could extend to five days.

The notice states that Coventry City Council gives notice to facilitate urgent carriageway clean up works due to an oil spillage on Hollyfast Lane and has imposed a temporary road closure. The effect of the notice is to prohibit vehicles from waiting, entering, or proceeding along Hollyfast Lane when prescribed signs are displayed. The notice applies at 10:00 hrs on 08 July 2026. The notice remains valid for a maximum duration of five days to allow for unexpected events and possible remedial works, or until the said works are completed, whichever is earlier. The works are expected to be completed by 12 July 2026.

Jo Davis arrived at the distressing scene at 6am. She expressed her frustration, indicating she was extremely upset and that it was infuriating that individuals believed such behaviour was tolerable, demonstrating a complete disregard for everything. She added that they probably had no regard for themselves either, and that she felt sorry for those tasked with cleaning up the mess.
