Coventry City’s place in the top flight will bring the club a minimum of £210m in income, with potential earnings reaching £365m, after achieving promotion under Frank Lampard.

The West Midlands club secured the Championship crown during Lampard’s tenure, marking a campaign that will reshape the club’s trajectory as they aim to re-establish themselves among England’s elite.

Deloitte’s 35th Annual Review of Football Finance demonstrates the financial significance of promotion and the importance of remaining in the top division through a team’s first campaign back.

According to the analysis, Coventry City can anticipate a revenue increase of at least £210m over the following three years, accounting for anticipated growth in matchday earnings, television rights, and commercial activities.

Ipswich Town, who also secured automatic promotion, stand to gain a minimum of £170m – a figure reduced because they were receiving parachute payments during 2025/26 after their relegation from the Premier League in 2024/25.

Should both clubs maintain their top-flight status after their inaugural season, these figures could climb to £365m and £325m respectively.

Following the playoff final at Wembley, Hull City overcame Middlesbrough to claim the final promotion spot. As they were not entitled to parachute payments during 2025/26, their financial gains should mirror those of Coventry City.

This term represented the last season featuring the four-team playoff structure, with the format expanding to include six sides from next season onwards. Consequently, clubs finishing seventh and eighth will now have the chance to compete for what is frequently described as football’s most valuable prize.

Clubs will benefit from these enhanced possibilities of securing a post-season position, particularly given that the 2025/26 campaign broke the recent pattern of all three promoted teams suffering immediate relegation. Despite Burnley’s drop to the Championship, Leeds United achieved a 14th-placed finish, while Sunderland – winners of the 2024/25 playoffs – finished seventh, becoming only the fifth promoted club to qualify for European competition through their league position in their first season back in the Premier League.

Any clubs achieving promotion for the 2026/27 season who mirror Sunderland’s achievement can anticipate returns substantially exceeding the minimum figures mentioned.

With the World Cup approaching its decisive phase and clubs preparing to strengthen their squads shortly, new players are expected to arrive at the club soon.

Shortly after promotion was confirmed, Doug King addressed questions about the transfer window and ensuring the club maintains its Premier League status.

He explained that the club would determine its approach and proceed discreetly to gain every possible edge for success in the top division. He noted that the question essentially suggested spending enormous sums, but emphasized that people frequently make poor investments. He stated that the club seeks value, and while expensive players can sometimes represent good value, many costly players do not offer it. He added that the club would do what was necessary, but warned against equating survival and achievement simply with massive spending, describing this as a mistake.
