‘Smack in the face’ – Frank Lampard already preparing for Premier League challenge

Published on

Frank Lampard and the powers at Coventry City have already started preparing for the huge challenge of Premier League football next season which he admits will be ready to “smack” his players in the face. The Sky Blues last night clinched the Championship title in sensational style with a 5-1 thumping of Portsmouth with two games to spare, crowning an incredible season that’s amassed 26 league wins, 90 goals and 89 points with six more up for grabs in the remaining fixtures against Wrexham and Watford. Only one of the current squad, Frank Onyeka, has extensive top flight experience with Brentford while striker Ellis Simms has 12 appearances to his name from his time at Everton and Matt Grimes played four times for Swansea a decade ago when the Swans had a spell in the highest league in the land. A huge majority of them haven’t been there but yeah, of course they’re excited.” As for the size of the task in hand, he added: “That will be the big challenge for everyone at the football club because it’s a big step. That’s the reality. It just shows you when you look at how many teams go there and invest a lot and maybe come down. It’s not easy. “But for each individual, don’t worry about that for this moment. Just finish the season well and dream of that challenge because it’s going to be coming and smacking them in the face. “So have a good summer and get ready to train and improve because that’s what it is and that’s what we all want, right, to be challenged even more.” Asked if he can sit back and enjoy the final two games before turning his attention to the huge job in the summer of getting the club Premier League ready in order to be competitive next season, he said: “No, no, we do two jobs at once now. It’s what our job is. We’re going to do multiple jobs at once so we can enjoy and focus on the games and enjoy the moment, and also start talking about next season. “We knew after Sheffield Wednesday and after the Middlesbrough/Portsmouth result that we were promoted because the goal difference wasn’t going to change. So it’s important that there’s a lot of work to do.” As for whether he and owner Dsoug King are aligned in terms of strengthening, he said: “We’ll have those chats and go from now.” He added: “We’re not a team that came down and half of them have been there and go, we’ll go back up there. They haven’t been there. So they’re desperate to be there. “It’s what the aim was, right? Everyone wants to get to the Premier League. People say it’s the toughest league to go in and I understand that because it’s an endurance test. And when you’re a team that’s been out of it for so long, it means so much more because of the difficulties the club’s been through.” Every day, the CoventryLive football desk strive to deliver all manner of news, features and transfer-related stories as a part of our overall package of Coventry City content.
