There are a few certainties in life; death, taxes and Frank Lampard leaving Coventry City . But the timing of the latter is not now or any time soon. You see, while the 47-year-old is fiercely ambitious he’s also incredibly smart. He’s been a great fit for the Sky Blues, and the club for him, in what has been a mutually beneficial arrangement – Coventry returning to the Premier League after a 25 year absence and Lampard strengthening his reputation as a top coach and man manager. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to part company come the summer when, inevitably, he’ll be a sought-after head coach for any jobs going in the elite division this proud Midlands club is about to rejoin. However, Lampard has a special connection with City and it will take one heck of an offer and set of circumstances to prise him away. Lampard knew about Coventry’s fanbase before he arrived, not least from the noise and turnout at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final of 2024 when he watched on from his living room as a neutral. He then witnessed it at first hand at Millwall in only his second game in charge where he was pushed forward – reluctantly due to his shyness – by post-match cheer leader Milan van Ewijk to begin what has become a routine fist pump finale to every victorious outcome since. The supporters soon took to their new manager, who had big boots to fill following in Mark Robins’ footsteps of sustained success, while the England legend’s affection for the club grew quickly. In short, he loves the place and everything about it. He loves the way the fans have songs for every player, enjoys coming to work every day to coach a terrific group of players who are hungry to learn, improve and hit new heights in their careers. He and the club now sit on the brink of a rare historic moment in Coventry City’s 143 year history and the prospect and challenge of competing at the top table of English football once more. You don’t just walk away from that with the first offer that pops up. That’s not to say there won’t be time for reflection in the summer, a period of assessment and taking stock of what he’s got to work with next season. He won’t want to fail, that’s for sure, and will therefore seek assurances from Doug King that he’ll be given the tools to significantly strengthen in order to have a good go next season. When asked about the subject recently, the owner said: “I think he’s very comfortable and very happy in his environment at Coventry, and I think he really enjoys it. Now obviously, as in anything, decisions have to be made in people’s lives and I can’t speak for Frank. “But he’s under contract with us and I’m sure he wants to manage us in the Premier League…” Based in London, location and the lure of his beloved Chelsea would be a concern if there was a vacancy at Stamford Bridge in the next couple of months. But other than that I like to think we’ve got Super Frankie Lampard for a while longer yet.
