Construction of a new £27m leisure facility in Atherstone is set to begin this Easter. Speller Metcalfe is leading the major redevelopment project.
Contractors will take possession of the existing building and car park on Long Street to begin the first phase of the project in mid-April. Hoarding will be erected around the site ahead of Memorial Hall being demolished.
North Warwickshire Borough Council said the new facility will include state-of-the-art facilities and improved accessibility, as previously reported by CoventryLive. It has been designed to meet the needs of all ages, creating a better environment for fitness, social activity and wellbeing.
Closure of the Atherstone Leisure Complex and Memorial Hall is scheduled for Sunday, April 12. During the redevelopment project, the site car park will also be out of use for two years.
Members can access alternative facilities at Polesworth Fitness Hub and Coleshill Leisure Centre. Classes at Memorial Hall will move to the Queen Elizabeth Academy, with North Warwickshire Borough Council providing a dedicated bus service to swimming pools in neighbouring boroughs.
Councillor David Wright said: “North Warwickshire Borough Council is proud to be building a new centre in the borough that will serve as a vibrant destination for residents and visitors. Designed to complement the historic heart of the town, the new centre will bring wide-ranging benefits to the local economy and the community, strengthening its role as a place where people can live well, stay active and come together.”
Mark Hudgeon, Divisional Director at Speller Metcalfe, added: “It is an exciting project for Atherstone and the wider community. We are proud to be working with North Warwickshire Borough Council to deliver a modern leisure facility that will support health, wellbeing and community activity for years to come.”
