Funeral chapels at three cemetery sites across Nuneaton could be transformed into burial chambers. This is among the solutions being explored by Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council as it grapples with dwindling burial capacity within the town. Cabinet members gave the go-ahead for an investigation into possibly converting the chapels situated at Attleborough, Bucks Hill and Oaston Road cemeteries into interment vaults. The Oaston Road chapel has been shut since December amid worries about its condition. At that point the authority implemented what it called a precautionary step following the emergence of structural issues. It has stayed locked ever since. Now this particular chapel alongside two others located at cemeteries throughout the town might accommodate burial vaults. This represents one of several approaches the cabinet endorsed to address the requirement for additional burial ground in the town. Suggestions that certain existing public park areas could serve as burial ground were dismissed, though land situated near Park Lane was put forward as a possible cemetery location. Preliminary assessment work would be necessary to determine whether the site is appropriate, and this proposal together with others requires ratification by the full council, which is scheduled to convene on Wednesday 29 April.
