World Cup disappointment as Coventry City internationals head home

Published on

Ephron Mason-Clark and Joel Latibeaudiere suffered disappointment as Jamaica failed to qualify for the World Cup finals in their play-off final in Mexico.

The Coventry City pair both featured in the 1-0 extra-time defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo who qualified for their first World Cup in 52 years, courtesy of a goal from Axel Tuanzebe at the Guadalajara Stadium.

Latibeaudiere played the full 120 minutes at right-back while Mason-Clark went on in the 74th minute for Tyreece Campbell, playing the remaining 46 minutes. The fact that the winger only played effectively half a game might bode well as the pair head back to the UK to prepare for the Sky Blues’ game against Derby County at the CBS Arena on Friday evening (8pm), albeit jet-lag will also have to be taken into account.

Meanwhile, Jay Dasilva played 88 minutes for Wales in their 1-1 friendly draw with Northern Ireland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night, having also been unable to qualify for the World Cup in last week’s defeat to Bosnia Herzegovina who went on to beat Italy 4-1 on penalties (1-1 AET) in their play-off final to ensure they head to this summer’s finals in North America.

Elsewhere, key midfield man Frank Onyeka played 81 minutes for Nigeria in their 2-2 friendly draw with Jordan in Turkey yesterday. And Romain Esse played and scored for England Under-21s in a 4-1 UEFA Euro qualifier victory over Moldova at Carrow Road, Norwich. The on loan winger from Crystal Palace went on in the 58th minute for Lee Carsley’s young Lions and scored the fourth goal in the 82nd minute.
