Coventry City’s ‘unbelievable’ ‘kick-ass’ ‘fairy-tale’ season best since ’87

Published on

Coventry City are on the brink of the club’s best season for decades, sparking memories of 1987 when winning the FA Cup turned the city sky blue.

The football club galvanised the community, put smiles on faces, old and young, as the Sky Blues basked in a magnificent cup run that culminated in a rare and beautiful moment of success in the club’s history.

And now, almost 40 years on, City are on the verge of promotion after an incredible season that’s seen Frank Lampard’s side dominate at the top of the Championship for most of the campaign.

Fans can almost touch the club’s return to the Premier League after a 25 year absence. We asked supporters to sum up the season and how they think the last seven games will pan out. Here’s what you said.

Luke Haskins: Outstanding! Even with a small blip over Christmas we didn’t play that badly. Only really Ipswich have had the better of us this season and they are one of the parachute clubs. The atmosphere has been electric, good times on and off the pitch for the City.

Garry Jones: Probably the best season in my lifetime. 1987 was a great cup run, but there hasn’t been this (so far) emphatic.

Tony Upton: The best season we could have hoped for. Outstanding performances all round. Rushworth is worth his weight in gold and has saved us so many points this season. The Tank is just what we needed in midfield and has took the pressure off Matty Grimes. When needed, players have come and done a great job covering for injuries and lack of form. Win our home games and we’re home safe and dry.

Richard Parkes: Absolutely amazing season. Would never thought at the start of the season we would do this well. Think we can win all the remaining games but think at least 4 wins would do us. Not gonna believe it until it’s mathematically done. Frank the Tank has been the signing we needed in January to help us get over the line.

Marcus Leach: Without getting ahead of ourselves it’s apparent from how badly we’ve done against the parachute teams (Leicester excepted) that the current squad would struggle in the PL. So, if/when we get there the squad will need to be strengthened in the Summer, hopefully there is a budget for this.

Regarding the remaining seven games, I believe we should get the points required but as a long standing I’m not going to celebrate until it’s mathematically impossible for us not to be promoted. I didn’t agree with Frank Lampard’s appointment but I’m happy to have eaten my words since then.

Tony Milanovic: Absolutely brilliant. Even with that blip, the lads pulled their socks up when it mattered most. The signing of Onyeka came at a vital time. Looking extremely promising for us in the last few games.

Ajitpal Singh: Unreal. Still find myself continually looking at the table.

Marc Friel: Unbelievable there’s no way I expect to be top going into the final straight 9 points ahead of 2nd & 11 ahead of 3rd & 4th I don’t care bout the performances now it’s jus bout getting over the line.

Paul Summers: Best season in my lifetime. Maybe the season in the premier league when we finished 11th could compete. But this season has been so good because it generally felt like we’d be slogging for the playoffs again.

Bryan Dean: This season – a kick ass ride. Last 7 games – will be nervy but we will do it.

Keith Foster: Excellent season. Even in the “blip” we were only really bad in a couple of games. I’m a bit worried we could lose a couple of games and make it a nervy end to the season but I don’t think we will. In the dream scenario we win the next three and it’s done.

Barbara Hart: We’ve certainly over-achieved this season to put it mildly. No-one could have predicted where we would be at this time, back in August 2025. I guess Frank hinted at it by steering us to the play-off semifinal at Sunderland, only to be so cruelly robbed at the 11th hour. Maybe it was karma. Now we’re on a journey into the ‘promised land’ and who knows where?

Chad Valentine: Incredible! We were due a good run after the last few seasons where we’ve been up there but not quite there.

Christine Brushett: It’s our time, onwards and upwards Sky Blues.

Steve Jordan: It’s been unbelievable, I never thought we would be where we are now. On the verge of promotion, maybe even champions.

Helen Power: Back to 1987. Love it!

Will Edred Wilkes: This season has been beyond all of my expectations. I was hoping for a solid top 6. This has honestly been like a fairy-tale, with a bit of stress in the middle. I was livid with the summer transfer window, thinking we needed a striker and centre half still. Then we went and bought the stadium and I said anything but relegation would be a good season now. That justified the lack of investment in the team as I saw it. But I can’t complain about anything. It’s like we’re on the crest of a wave that just isn’t stopping. Like what our parents and grandparents spoke about when they referred to the sky blue revolution of the 60s. Unbelievable.

Chris Bourne: Best season ever I’ve followed the Sky Blues for 57 years, and this exceeds anything I can ever remember including 87.
