Sixty years of family tradition at Coventry chippy

Published on

Carrying on a 60-year family tradition, Deano Tandon maintains that fish and chips are part of his heritage. He is resolved to expand upon what his father established while creating his own identity in Coventry. Since launching Deanos Chippy in 2022, Deano has prioritised maintaining the same core principles that have been handed down through multiple generations. He explains that the business has always centred on providing quality food at reasonable prices, which maintains a loyal base of repeat customers. Deano, who is 47, entered the trade after completing his studies in 2001, following in the footsteps of his father Rai, who began his career in Alum Rock. The pair operated Radford Road Fish Saloon together with Andy and Helens Fish Bar in Willenhall before acquiring Binley Mega Chippy in 2008.

Deano states that the family enterprise runs in his blood, remembering how he assisted his father from the age of 8. His formative experiences with demanding work shaped his path and inspired him to carry the family tradition forward. Enthusiasm, Deano explains, sustains him through lengthy days that frequently extend from morning until late evening. In spite of the demanding schedule, he maintains he still derives satisfaction from the work and believes achievement only arrives when you invest yourself fully. However, the sector confronts significant obstacles, with escalating expenses for gas, electricity and supplies persistently reducing margins. Deano observes that this has created consequences throughout the entire operation.

Deano has remained dedicated to maintaining affordable menu prices so that devoted patrons are not burdened by constantly climbing expenses. He has always taken pride in his trade, from preparing potatoes as a child to filleting fresh fish today, and this has strengthened his devotion to the work. It is the reliability and excellence that encourage people to return repeatedly, and nobody understands this better than Paul Darrington. Having frequented the establishment twice within two days, Paul, who is 57, characterised Deanos as outstanding and commended both the welcoming personnel and appetising cuisine. He joked that the only drawback is savouring it perhaps a little too much.

Deano states he has no intention of reducing his pace and stays concentrated on prolonging the family tradition while establishing his own identity in the sector, aspiring to construct something enduring. He characterises it as more than merely a commercial venture, but rather a lifelong enthusiasm moulded by years of dedication, pride and cultural inheritance.
