Historic Coventry library celebrates four decades at unique Locarno site

Published on

Coventry Central Library is commemorating four decades of encouraging education, championing literature, and serving the local community within the historic Locarno structure. The facility first welcomed visitors on 10 February 1986.

The library was established through the transformation of the former Locarno venue located on Smithford Way. Just a quarter of an hour after its inauguration, more than 100 individuals were exploring the collections, which comprised 125,000 volumes alongside vinyl records and cassette recordings.

Personnel at the library observed the milestone anniversary with a dedicated gathering in February. Attendees were treated to entertainment from a Ukrainian vocal ensemble alongside recitals of verse.

Councillor Dr Kindy Sandhu, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, expressed that marking 40 years of Central Library and its essential contribution to the city was remarkable, noting how it unites residents for learning, reading and personal development.

She observed that while the institution has evolved throughout the decades, it has persisted as a significant feature of the urban core, guaranteeing that all inhabitants have access to a location where they can select a book, utilise computing facilities or pursue activities such as acquiring new languages.

She added that celebrating Central Library during this particular year, designated as the National Year of Reading and focused on motivating individuals to engage with more reading in their everyday routines, rendered the recognition of Coventry’s excellent library services particularly meaningful.
